Model Form

Glossary

Concise, clear definitions of modeling, tooling and composite terms.

CTE (Thermal Expansion)
The rate a material expands dimensionally with temperature change (ISO 11359).
Core Box
The tool used to make cores that form internal cavities in castings.
Gelcoat
The first resin layer applied to form the surface of a mold or part.
HDT (Heat Deflection Temp.)
The temperature at which a material deforms under a defined load (ISO 75).
Lamination
Building a composite by laying fiber reinforcement with resin layer by layer.
Master Model
The reference model from which molds are produced.
Modeling Board (MB)
A medium-density board used for master models and foundry patterns.
Negative
An intermediate mold carrying the reverse (female) form of a model.
Pattern Plate
A plate carrying the pattern that forms the mold shape in the sand.
Prepreg
Fiber fabric pre-impregnated with resin and cured in an autoclave.
RTM
Resin Transfer Molding: resin is injected under pressure into a closed mold.
Resin Infusion (RIF)
A closed-mold process where dry fiber is impregnated with resin under vacuum.
Shore Hardness
Surface hardness measured on the Shore A/D scale (ISO 868).
Styling Board (SB)
A low-density, easy-to-machine board used for design and form studies.
Tooling Board
A CNC-machinable polyurethane or epoxy block material used to make models, molds and masters.
Working/Tooling Board (WB)
A high-density, temperature-resistant board used for composite and forming molds.
